MARCIA JONES
Through her renown as a performance artist/painter Marcia has traveled extensively: touring the West Coast with the outspoken women’s collective SWARM (1997); touring England and Scotland with Poet/Actor/Recording Artist Saul Williams (1998); touring Turkey with Trip-Hop/Acid Jazz Band Wax Poetics (Atlantic Records) including featured performances at the Istanbul International Jazz Festival (1998). She has shared the stage with such performers as Jurassic 5, Ozomatli, Mos Def, Greg Tate’s Medusa Oblongata, Imani Azuri, Jessica Care Moore, Sara Jones, Shelia Nicholls, R.I.S.E and Kim Hill. In addition to collaborative work Marcia has been featured as a solo performance artist at the New Museum of Contemporary Art (NY), The Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, Gallery 678 (NY), 2100 Square Feet (CA), Rush Arts Gallery (NY) and The 18th street Art Complex (CA).
However Marcia is not only a performance painter. She also creates studio works and commissions, which include cover illustrations for Time Warner Book of the Month club One Spirit, illustrations through-out Amy Andrieux Anarchy: An Anthology, and Tish Bensons Wild Like That (Fly By Night Press 2003). Having shared an ongoing collaborative relationship with Poet/Actor/Musician Saul Williams, Jones illustrated Williams CD cover Amethysts Rock Star, and created images through-out SHE (Simon and Schuster). Having served as the Artistic Director of Moore Black Press publishing (2004-2006), Marcia produced cover images for Saul Williams the Seventh Octave, Jessica Care Moore The Alphabet Verses the Ghetto; More Than and Athlete Poems by Etan Thomas, and The Subtle Art of Breathing by asha bandele. Marcia’s large-scale studio and installation works have been exhibited at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (NC), The Weatherspoon Art Museum (NC), Multi Cultural Resource Center Art Gallery at The University of North Carolina At Greensboro, The Elliott University Center Art Gallery (NC), The Eastern Standard Gallery (NC), The Greensboro Artist League (NC), Rush Art Gallery (NY), New Image Art (CA), and Spelman College (GA).
Marcia Jones received her Bachelors of Art in Fashion Design from Clark Atlanta University (1995), completed studies at the Art Student League (1998), and earned her Masters of Fine Art in painting from the University of North Carolina (2004). Jones was selected by Fulton County Arts to attend The Caversham Printmaking Fellowship in South Africa (2005), received an invitational to attend the Spelman College Taller Portobello Artist Colony in Taller Portobello, Panama in (2006), was awarded an Artist in Residency at the Studioplex Arts Complex Atlanta, GA (2008), and served as a W.E.B Dubois Fellow at Clark Atlanta University where she was a Lecturing Professor of Art.
